興業銀行 ： industrial bank
"Wal-Mart dropping bid to establish banking firm"
Wal-Mart announced Friday that it was withdrawing its application for a bank charter, which aroused widespread opposition from banks, lawmakers and consumer groups, and spurred debate within Congress and before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
The FDIC was considering Wal-Mart's application to establish an industrial loan corporation, which is a limited-purpose bank for processing credit card and other payments.
Industrial banks have been proliferating in recent years - Target Corp., United-Health Group Inc. and Harley-Davidson Inc. are among the nearly 60 that now exist.

世界最大の小売業ウォルマートが、興業銀行 （Industrial bank) を設立することをあきらめたという記事です。興業銀行といっても、昔日本に存在した日本興業銀行とは違い、 この興業銀行は、非金融機関によって所有される銀行で、この記事の中でも述べていますように、 クレジットカード決済やその他の支払いを主目的とした銀行です。
今回、ウォルマートが興業銀行の設立をあきらめた理由は、ウォルマートのような世界一の小売業が独自の銀行を所有することに対する不安が 既存の銀行のみならず、議会の議員、消費者の中から数多く出てきたことが考えられます。
ちなみに、日本のトヨタ自動車は日本国内では難しいといわれている銀行免許を2005年にアメリカで取得し、 アメリカ国内の代理店向け資金融資や車購入等のクレジットカード決済をスタートとして銀行業務に参入する準備をしています。
