上の例文のように、疑問詞 “how” は、「どのように」、「どうやって」という方法・手段を尋ねる場合や、「状態」を尋ねる場合に使われます。

また、疑問詞 “how” は、様々な形容詞や副詞をともなって、「数量」、「程度」を尋ねることができます。

• How often do you attend the sales seminar?
  　（どのくらい、営業セミナーに参加しますか）
• 回答例：Once a week.
  　（1週間に一回です）


• How much can we spend on promotion?
  　（プロモーションにどれくらい使えますか）
• 回答例：We can spend 10 percent of our budget.
  　（予算の10％です）


• How long will it take from the station to your office?
  　（駅から、事務所までどれくらいかかりますか）
• 回答例：It will take about 10 minutes.
  　（およそ、10分です）


• How many people are in your department?
  　（あなたの部署には、何人いますか）
• 回答例：There are 20 staff members.
  　（20人です）

その他に、How fast..？（どれくらい速く）、 How soon..？（どれくらいすぐに）、 How old..？（何歳）、 How far..？（どれくらいの距離）、 How tall..？（背の高さ） などの表現があります。

“how” には、下記のような慣用表現があります。

• How come you were late?
  　（なぜ遅れたの）
• How would you like to talk about that matter?
  　（あの件を話し合うのはいかかですか）

“How come..？” は、“How (does it) come (about that) S+V ..？” の省略形です。
