One reader raises a question about short-selling ― borrowing shares to sell on the expectation that the
price will drop ― a practice that the Securities and Exchange Commission
has moved this week to restrict.

最近倒産したアメリカの証券会社リーマン・ブラザーズの株価は、経営難が噂されてから株価が大幅に続落していましたが、 例えば、投資家が、株価が4ドルの時に株を借り、その株を売り、株価が3ドルに下落した時に、株を買い戻して 株を返却した場合、差額の1ドルが投資家の利益になります。
空売り (short-selling) は、信用取引で (on margin) 行われる投資方法で、証券会社に信用取引口座 (margin account) を開設する必要があります。
